The national program for the prevention of secondary fractures caused by osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is recognized as a silent and asymptomatic disease characterized by low bone density and deterioration of bone tissue structure. This bone tissue loss leads to a decrease in bone strength, making the skeleton fragile and prone to fractures from very minor impacts or falls from a short height. The World Health Organization has identified this disease, alongside cancer, heart attack, and stroke, as one of the four main enemies of humanity. With the aging population and lifestyle changes, the number of individuals affected by osteoporosis is increasing worldwide. This disease affects approximately 25% of women over the age of 50 and is considered a significant public health issue. Despite this, it has been largely overlooked, resulting in diagnoses that either do not occur at all or are made only in very advanced stages or following a fracture.

Introduction of the Integrated Fracture Prevention System

The Fracture Liaison Service (FLS), designed as a model for integrating all necessary services for the prevention of secondary fractures, has commenced operations in Iran under the name Osteopad. This service aims to identify osteoporosis in patients with fractures and provide the necessary services to prevent secondary fractures in these individuals.

Osteopad ensures that patients benefit from timely osteoporosis treatment and related services, such as fall prevention, through comprehensive assessment, targeted interventions, and appropriate follow-up.
